INTRODUCTION

West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd., a fully owned company by the Government of West Bengal, was incorporated in July 1985.The main objectives and functions of the company are stipulated in its Memorandum and Articles of Association which state that the Company is to carry on interalia the business of electric power generation and supply.

The authorised share capital of the Company is Rs.2000 crore, divided into equity shares of Rs.1000 each.

BACKGROUND

The corporation began its journey by taking over Kolaghat Thermal Power Project from WBSEB in 1985. At the time of its incorporation, there was only one 210 MW unit in operation at Kolaghat. Since then, five more units of 210 MW each have been added to this plant.

Today, the WBPDCL has under its control Kolaghat Thermal Power Station involving a total installed capacity of 1260 MW. All the units of this station are in operation. Besides, the operation corporation is also implementing Bakreswar Thermal Power Project (5 x 210 MW out of which two units are in joint venture).

The total manpower of the company at present is 2222.

RUNNING POWER STATIONS

i) KTPS Stage I ( 3 x 210 MW Units)
i) KTPS Stage II ( 3 x 210 MW Units)
iii) BkTPP Stage I (2 x 210 MW Unit commissioned Out of three units) 

PROJECT UNDER IMPLEMENTATION

Generation Project :   i) The 1st unit synchronized on 18th July in record time about 37 months and 17 days.
ii) BkTPP 2nd unit synchronized on 20th May,2000 & under stabilization    
iii) BkTPP 3rd Unit is under construction  
    Unit # 3 Synchronization – September 2000

Transmission Package : The generator output at 15.75 KV is  stepped up to 220 KV/ 400 KV. The entire power will be evacuated at 220 KV and 400 KV transmission system.

JOINT VENTURE COMPANIES

a) Bakreswar Power Generation Company Ltd. A Joint Venture Company of  WBPDCL, DCL & associates for unit # 4 & 5 of Bakreswar Thermal Power Project.
Present Status of the Project EPC Contract :- Letter of Intent has been issued to M/s. MITSUI  BABCOCK  ENERGY (I) PVT. LTD. on 24th December,1999.
b) Bengal Emta Coal Mines Ltd. A joint venture company of  WBSEB, WBPDCL & EMTA for coal mining of captive coal field for power stations of  WBSEB & WBPDCL. The Company was incorporated on February,1996 with Authorised Capital of Rs. 5 (five) Crores. In this joint venture company the equity shares of WBPDCL is 12% and of WBSEB is 14% and the balance 74% is wuth the EMTA.

The Company has started coal mining operation and supplying of coal to power stations of WBSEB & WBPDCL.

. Performance In the year 1998-99 the Company despatched 1.78 Million tonnes of coal in 548 Rakes to WBSEB & WBPDCL. In the year 1999-2000 the Company despatched to 2.18 Million tonnes of coal in 679 Rakes to WBSEB and WBPDCL
